  • Arenal
  • Central Pacific Coast:
  • Turrialba

Dates: Year Round

Description: Nurses can earn up to 33 CE contact hours per week. Courses run every week of the year. Effective communication is the key to providing patients with quality healthcare. With Spanish being the second most common language spoken in the United States behind English, it is increasingly important for healthcare providers to offer their services in Spanish. With this fact in mind AEC of Costa Rica has designed a special, nurse-specific Spanish program. This California BRN approved program has been carefully tailored to meet the needs of nurses who work with Spanish-speaking patients and their families.

(Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider # 14767)

AEC Nursing Spanish

Highlights: This program will give nurses the ability to converse with Spanish speaking patients in a hospital or clinic environment. The program's goal is to develop or improve a nurse's Spanish language abilities in the workplace. Students enrolled in the Nursing Spanish Program will learn standard Spanish in 4 hour morning classes each day. They will be placed in one of nine different levels based on their individual Spanish proficiency. The students will then join in on the 6 hour afternoon classes and site visitations (spread out throughout the week) that have been designed to accommodate all levels of Spanish ability, and focus on nursing Spanish terminology and Spanish speaking communication skills.

The class time is supplemented with the addition of medical site visitations to local Costa Rican clinics and hospitals. During these visitations, students will accompany staff to local hospitals and clinics. Evening talks are also scheduled once a week where specific areas of interest to individual students can be discussed.

The AEC Spanish Institute nursing program consists of:

* 4 hours per day of morning Standard Spanish classes. Each student will be separated into one of nine levels of Spanish classes aimed at their current individual level of Spanish fluency.

* 3 hours per week of afternoon class of weekly blocks of related subject matter (This time is spread throughout the week) , geared toward learning medical terminology and culturally appropriate communication skills designed to be specifically applicable for nurses in dealing with Spanish speaking patients and their families.

* Weekending charlas (medical seminars) with combined classes of medical and nursing Spanish students and our staff to discuss that week's block of subject material, allowing individual questions from students who wish to clarify or expand on that week's classroom content.
