English Homestay in Christchurch, New Zealand

Highlights: We welcome you to our 18-month-old home which is situated on the Port Hills of Christchurch city. Our home has extensive north and westerly views over the city, the Canterbury Plains and the often snow-clad Southern Alps. We have built our home in a newly developed and picturesque subdivision called Broad Oaks which is in a hill suburb called Cashmere. Our home has three double bedrooms, a guest bathroom and toilet and a separate study with full computer and Internet facilities. It also has a modern well equipped kitchen, a dining room and separate lounge. Outside, you can relax in a hammock, sit in a spa (hot tub) or admire the view from either of the two decks. Sitting in the spa at night is a magical experience with the lights of the city twinkle in the background. The grounds are planted out in a range of New Zealand native trees which attract a variety of native birdlife from the Tui to the Bellbird. Our home is located a short walk from regular bus routes which feed into extensive shopping malls, sports complexes and the central city and business area.

Christchurch is located on the dry and sunny east coast of the South Island of New Zealand. It has a temperate climate with hot summers (November, December, January and February) that can reach into the low 30 degrees Celsius. Winters (June, July and August) can be cold and wet with snow and the skiing season lasting into September. Snowfalls on the city are a relatively rare event. Christchurch, which has a population of 380000, is often referred to as the garden city of New Zealand. In 1997 it was ranked 9th best Tourist City in the world by Travel and Leisure magazine and it has also won the International Garden City award. There is nowhere else in the world where within two hours of an international airport can you ski at a world class alpine resort, play golf, on superb courses, bungy jump, go rafting, mountain biking, wind surfing, whale watching, visit world class wineries and gardens or relax in thermal hot pools at Hanmer Springs. Christchurch is alive with colour, atmosphere and world-class attractions.

Sport, cultural activities and educational establishments abound in the city. International sporting facilities include swimming complexes, basketball and netball stadiums, a recently remodelled athletics and soccer stadium, international facilities for horse racing and of course Jade Stadium which is home to the internationally known rugby team called the Canterbury Crusaders. Five ski-fields are within two hours driving time from Christchurch. The city is the international gateway to all the major tourist attractions of the South Island of New Zealand, namely Queenstown, the rugged West Coast, Kaikoura, Nelson and the Marlborough Sounds, Stewart Island and Fiordland with its world famous Milford Walk. A brand new Art Gallery is in the last stages of construction and the city has theatres for orchestra, opera and a wide variety of musical shows. Two universities serve the city along with Polytechnical Colleges, Teacher Training establishments and a large number of Secondary and Primary Schools.

For many years New Zealand was known chiefly for having a larger population of sheep than humans. But today the world is rediscovering the island nation not only for its striking landscape but also for being a haven for travellers. Its natural beauty is showcased in The Lord of the Rings movies, which were shot here. Whether you wish to see where Hobbiton was filmed, or just want a decent lamb chop, I am sure you will be amazed at what New Zealand can offer you.
